Ecoprinting and Natural Dyeing

Lizzie Godden

Our speaker this month will be Lizzie Godden. Lizzie is a textile artist, living in the beautiful Forest of Dean. She enjoys making plant dyes to colour fabric and thread, and loves to 'slow stitch'. She enjoys ecoprinting onto fabric and paper, printing onto garments, making cards and constructing items using ecoprinted fabric and paper.  She loves to walk in the woods and gather interesting things - old rusty items, pieces of fallen bark, leaves and fruit - and then use them as inspiration and for dyeing and printing, as well as for wine making!

At our guild meeting last month, we were introduced to eco-dyeing, and to the plants which can be used to colour fibre and cloth, and which we might find growing in our gardens. This month, our speaker builds on that introduction and will talk in more detail about natural dyeing and eco-printing, and will identify more plants growing around us, and which which can be used for ecoprinting.

The Gloucestershire Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers is affiliated to the national Association of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers (www.wsd.org.uk).

Monthly meetings (January to November) are held on the 3rd Saturday of the month at Norton Village Hall (GL2 9LJ).  The programme of events consists of a variety of speakers and workshops related to our crafts.

During the morning the hall is open from 10am for members and guests to join in a spinning/weaving session during which people can chat and exchange information and techniques over a cup of coffee. Guild meetings then follow at 1.45pm, before our guest speaker is introduced at 2pm. Our meetings end at 4pm.

The aim of the guild is to promote the art of weaving, spinning and dyeing.  To support this, an independent workshop is run by a guild member twice a month on the Wednesday following the monthly meeting and again two weeks later, during which tuition and support is offered to those who attend, no matter their level of ability.  Many existing and new guild members attend these workshops.

The guild also gives demonstrations at a number of events throughout the year.
